SharePoint 2019 – My Site is currently not available.

Something has gone wrong when setting up MySites in a fairly new SharePoint 2019 environment. Browsing to the MySite URL for the first few users shows the following message:

My Site is currently not available.
You may not have the right permissions.

As it turns out this was a simple fix – Self-Service Site Creation was not enabled for the MySite Web Application (Central Administration -> Manage Web Applications -> MySite Host -> Self-Service Site Creation).
