AutoSPInstaller error – the tool was unable to install Application Server Role, Web Server (IIS) Role

I have just downloaded AutoSPInstaller 3.96 to install SharePoint 2013 onto a clean Windows 2012 R2 server but it fails to install the IIS role, generating the following error:

WARNING: 2014-04-20 18:01:10 – Error: Unable to install (2)
WARNING: 2014-04-20 18:01:10 – Error: [In HRESULT format] (-2147024894)
WARNING: 2014-04-20 18:01:10 – Error: The tool was unable to install Application Server Role, Web Server (IIS) Role.
WARNING: 2014-04-20 18:01:10 – Last return code (2)

The reason for this, it seems, is that SharePoint 2013 is not supported on Windows 2012 R2 (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2891274) and the prerequisiteinstaller.exe fails to install the required roles and features. I guess I’ll be waiting for SharePoint 2013 SP1 to be released…
